What it is

Chemical peels are one of the most studied and proven tools in aesthetic medicine — and for menopausal skin, they address multiple concerns simultaneously: dullness, uneven pigmentation, fine lines, rough texture, and a loss of radiance that many women notice in their forties and beyond. Our physician-selected peel protocols range from superficial brightening treatments to deeper resurfacing procedures, each chosen for its appropriateness to your hormonal skin state. The key difference at London & Glow is that all peels are prescribed and supervised by our physician — not performed by an aesthetician following a template. This means we select the right acid, concentration, and interval for your individual skin biology.

How hormones shape this treatment

Declining oestrogen slows cell turnover significantly — the skin's natural exfoliation cycle, which once completed every 28 days, can extend to 40–60 days or more. This is why menopausal skin often looks dull and uneven despite a good skincare routine. Chemical peels accelerate cell turnover, addressing accumulated photodamage, hormonal pigmentation, and surface texture changes. However, menopausal skin is more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is why physician-level assessment is essential before any peeling treatment.

What to expect

  1. A skin analysis to assess your skin type, sensitivity, and suitability for chemical peeling

  2. A pre-peel preparation phase with specific skincare if you have not previously used actives

  3. The peel application itself — typically 10–30 minutes depending on depth and type

  4. A mild tingling sensation during application; deeper peels may cause transient stinging

  5. Peeling and flaking over 3–7 days post-treatment, followed by noticeably smoother, brighter skin

Frequently Asked Questions

We offer a range from superficial brightening peels (glycolic, lactic, mandelic) through to medium-depth resurfacing treatments. The choice depends on your skin type, hormonal history, sun exposure history, and treatment goals. Your physician will recommend the most appropriate option after a full assessment.

Not with a correctly selected protocol. The risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is real for menopausal skin — but it can be largely mitigated through proper patient selection, pre-peel preparation, and using the appropriate peel type and depth. This is exactly why physician oversight matters.

For superficial peels, a series of four to six sessions spaced three to four weeks apart typically delivers the most significant results. A single medium-depth peel may achieve similar improvement with more downtime. We create a personalised plan at your consultation.

Superficial peels often have minimal visible peeling — just mild flaking and brightness within 48 hours. Medium-depth peels typically involve visible peeling and redness for five to seven days. We will advise you clearly on what to expect before you book.

Pre-treatment: stop retinoids and AHAs seven days before. Avoid waxing, threading, or any mechanical exfoliation two weeks prior. Protect your skin from sun exposure. Post-treatment: do not peel or pick skin as it exfoliates. SPF 50 every day is essential. Avoid heat, steam, and sweating for 48 hours. No actives for seven days after peeling has completed.
